Causes of Dry Eye
There are many causes that contribute to the development of dry eyes:
- Aging
- Post-menopausal hormonal changes
- Medications such as antihypertensives, anxiolytics, antidepressants, and antihistamines
- Systemic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, collagen vascular disease such as lupus and fibromyalgia, and Sjogrens disease
- Eyelid abnormalities and local skin disease such as acne rosacea
- Recent eye surgery such as LASIK, cataract, glaucoma and retina surgery
- Inside and outside environment including wind, low humidity, AC vents and fan exposure, colder winter temperatures and spring/summer/fall allergens
